VoIP Telephony

VoIP: Use your internet connection for telephone calls.

No mobile signal where you live? No problem. Don’t want to pay for a separate phone line?

We have a solution.

Countryside Connections can turn your internet connection into a digital phone line, allowing crystal-clear voice calls or even complete phone systems without having to pay for a separate line. It’s called Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP for short and can be installed by us using any one of our internet connections; fibre-to-the-premises, 4G / 5G, fixed wireless, Starlink satellite.

Beat ‘The Big Switch Off’: by the end of 2025, the analogue phone network will be switched off, and anyone who has not switched could lose their number. All calls will be made via fast broadband, so beat the rush and join the digital revolution.

VoIP calls are cheap, too. They are typically 1/3rd less expensive than BT landline or mobile packages.

Frequently asked questions

What is VoIP?

Voice over Internet Protocol is a technology that allows voice to be sent over the Internet.  Using a broadband Internet connection and subscribing to a VoIP provider allows a person to make phone calls over the Internet.

How does VoIP work?

First, voice is converted by a device from an analog signal to a digital signal.  It is then sent over the Internet where it will be converted back to an analog signal for the remaining distance over a traditional circuit switch (PSTN). So for example… If you were calling a relative 200 miles away, the first 199 miles would be transmitted via the internet, the last 1 mile would drop back down onto a conventional telephone line.

What kind of internet connection do I need for VoIP?

You will need a fast broadband Internet connection which will have been provided previously by Countryside Connections as VoIP is an add-on feature.

Can I use my computer when I am on the VoIP phone?

Yes, you can work on the computer while on the VoIP phone.  They should not conflict with each other, furthermore, multiple calls can be held at the same time using this technology and the line will never be engaged.

What are the advantages of VoIP?

There are several advantages to VoIP over a traditional phone service, such as, price, portability, and extra features.  VoIP allows unlimited calls at one low monthly fee.  The taxation and regulation of VoIP is less than traditional phone service making the cost cheaper.  A person can pick a number, rather than be locked into certain area codes and prefixes.  With many providers, numerous features are offered as part of the basic monthly fee, such as call waiting, call forwarding, voicemail, call forwarding on busy, etc.

Once I install VoIP can I disconnect from my current telecom provider?

Yes, the VoIP service can be integrated throughout the premise by connecting to the existing phone wiring, already in place.

How is the quality of sound and speech on a VoIP call?

Usually better, but the quality can depend on many factors like bandwidth, Internet connections over the routed call, and the Codec being used by the provider.

I have an alarm system; can it be integrated with a VoIP system?

In some cases, yes, but many alarm companies equipment cannot integrate correctly with a VoIP signal, although great strides have occurred in the last couple of years.  There can also be the issue with a power outage, which in many cases will cause a loss of the Internet connection, resulting in the loss of VoIP service.  You should contact your individual alarm company’s technical support for exact answers about their services integration with VoIP.

If I lose power will I still be able to make phone calls with VoIP?

Losing power will cause your Internet connection to go down.  If this happens you will not be able to make calls unless you are equipped with a back up UPS, which could power the connection for a limited short duration.

Can I keep my same number?

Yes we can port your number over providing it is still active with your current landline provider.
